In early 2014 our friends at Bedrock Sandals decided to move their operation to Oakland. They rented the space at American Steel Studios adjacent to our woodshop. We designed and built a two story workshop on the cheap, using Craigslist materials and the help of friends. The most striking aspect of the space is the four large black walnut limbs which serve as load-bearing posts. Mortises were precisely laid out and cut to accept 2x12 beams. The second floor sits on these, as well as stick-framed walls. A canvas shell provides privacy, air filtration and a natural feel to the space. A light green stain on the OSB floor gives it a more organic feel. Diagonal braces were installed to make the entire structure more rigid. Other elements were subsequently added to the space to make it more attractive and functional as a sandal factory.
