We built this bed for ourselves, using reclaimed redwood and Douglas fir from local sources. It's a prototype for experimentation to improve the design of future beds. The entire bed can be dissembled and is put together using carriage bolts and 3.5" wood screws. All of the 2x4 Doug fir rungs are mortised into old growth redwood posts. We wanted this bed to be able to be comfortably stable as a free-standing structure. The Douglas fir X brace on the head end prevents side-to-side motion in one direction while the four shorter redwood diagonals support the other. All of the diagonals are sunken into the posts, making the bed sleeker and stronger. The 6'1" head height allows most people to walk underneath, reclaiming the floor space for other activities. It fits a full size mattress which is supported by rough-sawn redwood tongue and groove wainscoting.
